M is for Majestic: A National Parks Alphabet
David Domeniconi

Annotation:
Examines the history and lore of America’s national parks from Acadia National Park to Zion National Park.

From The Critics:
Children’s Literature - Barbara Youngblood This is a delightfully, entertaining book that uses the alphabet and the National Park system to encourage the reader to learn about some wonderful places. From A is for Acadia to Z is for Zion, the descriptions and illustrations of the various parks give great information. Living in the Western United States, I have been fortunate to visit several parks, but I realized after reading this book, that I had best pick up the pace, as I still have many more to visit. Typical animals, plants, birds and flora of the parks are discussed and illustrated. Families could use this as a tool for planning trips that would include a few parks along the way. A United States map pinpoints all the fifty parks and gives the reader a good overview. 2003, Sleeping Bear Press, Ages 3 to 10. School Library JournalGr 1-5-Using rhymed couplets, Domeniconi presents a glimpse of United States national parks from A to Z. For example, "A is for Acadia,-where the mountains meet the shore,-and the forest stands silent-beside the ocean’s roar." Carroll’s dramatic paintings bring the subjects to life. Paragraphs along the margins provide additional information about the site plus others that begin with the same letter. These places are depicted in smaller "snapshot" paintings that are arranged on the larger work to create the look of a scrapbook. A map identifies the locations of all the parks. Although the verse sometimes plods along, the illustrations will encourage browsing and hold a group’s attention. The book could serve as an introductory resource to pique interest in the topic.-Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Ghost Horses
Gloria Skurzynski

From the Publisher:
In this National Parks Mystery, twelve-year-old Jack Landon and his younger sister Ashley travel with their wildlife biologist mom and photographer dad to Utah’s Zion National Park. Dr. Olivia Landon becomes involved in an investigation into the strange behavior of a group of wild white mustangs that belong to the Chloride Herd. Trouble seems to follow the two yong Shoshone kids temporarily placed in the foster care of the Landons. A string of life-threatening disasters keeps young readers turning pages as the fast-paced story builds to a heart-stopping conclusion.

From The Critics:
Children’s LiteratureThe sixth in the popular "National Parks Mystery" series, this book has plenty to recommend. The action is shared fairly equally between tenyearold Ashley Landon and her thirteenyearold brother, Jack; this time around, their family travels to Zion National Park so that their mother, a wildlife biologist, can investigate the mysterious deaths of wild horses. Along for the ride are Ethan and Summer, a pair of Native American siblings whom the Landons have taken in as foster children. When peril strikes, is it just coincidence, or does the danger have to do with the "Ghost Dance" that Ethan tricks the Landon kids into doing? The nice thing about the series is that perils such as heavy snow, a flash flood, stampeding wild horses and forest fires are more dangerous than anything a professional gumshoe might face on the mean streets. As with other books in the series, the action is often edgeoftheseat, and the plot is at times truly spooky. A teacher doing a unit about national parks, or the environment, could use the entire series as a vehicle for getting students passionate about the splendors of America’s wilderness. 2000, National Geographic Society, Ages 10 to 13, $15.95. Reviewer: Donna Freedman School Library JournalGr 4-7-This story finds 12-year-old Jack and his younger sister Ashley exploring Zion National Park with their parents and two Shoshone foster kids. Ethan, who is Jack’s age, is not happy to be with a white family and complains bitterly. His quiet sister, Summer, knows something about the mysterious white mustangs that are running wild in the park. Rocks fall, horses charge. Is Ethan trying to hurt or possibly kill Jack’s family? The novel really picks up speed when Jack, his dad, and Ethan go on a treacherous hike through the Narrows. There is a lot going on in this mystery, yet it stays on target with only a minimal amount of preaching about the environment, race relations, and other social issues. Splendid photos accompany the sometimes pedestrian text, but unfortunately are bound together in the middle of the book and there are not enough of them. In spite of these drawbacks, Ghost Horses is an exciting and (don’t tell anybody) educational read.-Ann Cook, formerly at Winter Park Public Library, FL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

America’s National Park Roads and Parkways: Drawings from the Historic American Engineering Record (The Road and American Culture Series)
Timothy Davis (Editor)

From the Publisher:
The roads within America’s national park system reveal a wide range of technological, aesthetic, and philosophical concerns. Their design and construction epitomize the central challenge of national park management: how to balance environmental protection with public access. The Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), a division of the National Park Service, has spent more than a dozen years documenting the history of this vital aspect of the national park experience.America’s National Park Roads and Parkways brings together 331 measured and interpretive drawings commissioned by HAER to illustrate the physical characteristics, design strategies, construction practices, and visitor experiences of roads in national parks from Acadia to Zion and parkways from the Blue Ridge to the Natchez Trace. Also included are non--Park Service projects that utilized similar design strategies, including the Bronx River Parkway and the Columbia River Highway. The book documents thirty-one projects, explaining how roads shape visitor perceptions, highlighting key characteristics of individual park road systems, and connecting their design and construction to the broader history of American engineering and landscape architecture.More than a documentary record of historic design and construction practices, this book has practical applications for engineers, landscape architects, and cultural resource specialists in guiding design decisions, interpreting historic sites, and informing contemporary debates on preservation and environmental protection.

From The Critics:
School Library JournalGr 2-5-With colorful postcard-sized photos and accompanying travel notes, these titles are bound to hold readers’ attention. The format, whereby the author writes a first-person account of a trip, provides a good, accessible introduction to each of these places. The entries are loaded with historical and geographical facts, with an occasional anecdote such as an account of walking across the Victoria Falls Bridge: "We did, and we got soaked, even though we were wearing raincoats!" The handwritten text and use of colloquial language ("I snapped tons of photos of the falls-It was awesome") will help youngsters identify with the narrator in each book. The lively presentations will appeal to browsers as well as report writers.-Daniel Mungai, Queens Borough Public Library, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
